CITIES - CORDOBA

The port city of Cordoba is situated at the highest navigable point of the Guadalquivir River that flows into the Atlantic. The ancient town, founded by the Romans, is located close to the Sierra Morena and the winding mountain passes (gaps) that lead to the Meseta. The ancient medieval life of Cordoba is still apparent today: witness the irregular city plan and narrow roadways. Today, lovely plazas, promenades, water features and lush gardens adorn the landscape of this magnificent city set on the banks of a meander. The mighty “El Puente Romano” spans the river. This historic bridge was built by the Romans and served as a commercial link to the rest of the world.

In among private dwellings built around enclosed courtyards visible through beautifully sculptured wrought-iron fences, several splendid monuments stand as eloquent tributes to a glorious past and to those who enriched it: the Romans (architectural remains), the Moors (minaret towers and the Almodovar gate), the Jews (the synagogue) and the Christians (the rebuilt fortress of Alcazar, the Calahorra Tower and a number of gothic and mudejar churches). Today, the splendid church-mosque and the ancient roman bridge are reminiscent of the grandeur and beauty of the historic landmark that is Cordoba.
